Book Care

Animals Should NOT Borrow Library Books!

BOOK CARE is something that we teach, re-teach, and then re-teach again in the school library. And still we find pages with teeth marks or spilled drinks all over them.

Here is a learning center to help your students think about this subject in a different way. The "I Can" sign is a PDF file, and a free download from my TPT store. It lists the expectations for the students, and the footer lists the learning objectives, to show your administrators that you are indeed an educator focused on specific targets.

I like to set up this center during the first few weeks of school, as I'm giving library orientation lessons to the whole group.

The materials you'll need are: (1) this sign, in an acrylic sign holder; (2) printer paper, pre-printed with the prompt: " A _____________ should not borrow a library book because he would __________________." (3)pencils, colored pencils, crayons, or markers, in a container.

This center can be easily set up on a table. Print the sign twice and place it in an acrylic sign holder, standing up on the table, or laminate it, or put it in a page protector, so that it lasts and can be re-used next year. Set the printer paper and the markers/crayons/colored pencils each into a container so that students can easily clean up the center when they are finished with their work.

After a few days, choose some of the most creative and colorful drawings to display on a book care bulletin board. Posting student work all over the library shows that this giant classroom belongs to EVERYONE!

Introduce this center, and review book care, with this Powerpoint, great for lower elementary grades, from Highland Park Central.

  1. The link for the Powerpoint brings you to a page that says "Not Found." Is there anyway you can repost it.

    1. Jeri, thanks for letting me know about that!
I've saved the Powerpoint to my own Google docs and linked to it there. I hope it won't get lost now.

  2. I love the idea of library learning centers. I am going to try to do something like this because I have to cover two schools. This way I can leave a lesson to be completed when I am at my other school. Thanks!

    1. MW Library Diva, thanks for the feedback. I completely agree with you--library centers help us extend our reach and multiply our efforts. Please let me know how it goes with your centers this year!
