Dancing Flowers for the Check-out Desk

Hi friends! I'm not sure how I ended up here, but I just found these solar-powered dancing flowers on Amazon.

And, yes, I ordered them. They were just $1.99 plus shipping when I ordered. For two!

I've had some experience with solar-powered cuties on the checkout desk, and they have really made me smile, giggle and laugh.

This story may reveal too much about my personality, but I'll tell it anyway.

Several years ago, I was a high school librarian. I had a solar-powered monkey on the check-out desk. The monkey shook his head from side to side all day long. Nothing weird so far, right?

Here's where you learn about my twisted ways. A student would come up to the desk and ask me, "Miz Young, can I eat my Flamin' Hot Cheetohs while I'm in here reading?" I would feign indifference, and say, "Well, I don't know. Let's ask the monkey. Monkey, can he eat his Flamin' Hot Cheetohs in the library?" And the solar-powered monkey would continue to shake his head from side to side. And I'd say, seeming to be sad for the student, "Sorry, but the monkey says no." The student walked away, with a baffled look on his face.

No matter what a student would ask, I would phrase the question to the monkey so that the "no" agreed with the answer I would have given. And I would act surprised when the monkey shook his head "no."

This was a very busy job, with all of the wild high school discipline issues, and these little moments of inner laughter really brightened my day.

Now, I don't think I will pull any tricks like that on my dear little elementary school students. But I'm really gonna enjoy watching a colorful flower dance around on the checkout desk all day. I'll report back to you on how these work. They have good reviews on Amazon.

What little things brighten the day for you in YOUR library?

  1. What a great idea!! Think I might order some, too. We'll have a dancing flower revolution in the elementary libraries this fall...
