Blog Stalking (again)

Hi friends!

Yes, I've been blog stalking again. I get so many GREAT ideas from other librarians! Don't you?

I was reading The Busy Librarian and saw that Matthew Winner challenged himself and other librarians to read all of the books in a section of their library. Librarians would learn more about their collection and motivate each other to keep reading.

School Library Month Shelf Challenge

I love that idea, although I'm in an intense weeding phase and didn't participate. It made me think of another idea...challenging students to read all of the books on a given shelf in the library, and comment about the books in an Edmodo shelf challenge group.

I think that would be lots of fun for the students, who wouldn't have to spend much time thinking about what to read next. They'd get plenty of variety (unless I genre shelve, as I'm contemplating). It's pretty easy to explain and understand. I think it would be a blast!

Thanks for the super Shelf Challenge idea, Busy Librarian!

  1. Interesting twist on Matthew's idea. I like it! My county has just started delving into Edmodo, although I started experimenting with it last year. A shelf challenge would be a good first and easy step to using Edmodo. I might just have to borrow your tweaked idea. Thanks for sharing! =)

    1. I've been trying to think of a way to start a book club on Edmodo. This seems like one way to go! Thanks for stopping by, Jo!

  2. Ooo... that would be awesome! Are you going to try it out next year?

I can't shake the thought of how much my intermediate students would gain by reading a slew of fiction dust jackets. For all that I booktalk, that would give them a chance to cover more ground (and different ground from their peers).

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Matthew,
Yes, I am definitely going to try it next year. As I'm packing up our library for new carpet this summer, I'm thinking to myself, "I'd like to read all the books on this shelf...no, this shelf...no, this one!"
    Thanks for the inspiration!
